What to do when your carrier or broker asks for CPSC certificate data

If a carrier, freight forwarder, or broker asks for CPSC documents, the first job is to confirm who will file CPSC import data.

Audience: Importers whose carrier, freight forwarder, broker, or shipping partner requested CPSC data.

Ask the right operational question

Do not start by asking whether a PDF is enough. Start by asking exactly what data they need and who will file it.

Can your team file CPSC import data for this shipment?
Do you need all certificate details, such as product ID, CPSC rules, dates, lab, and records contact?
Do you need Product Registry ID numbers: Certifier ID, Product ID, and Version ID?
Do you need a specific spreadsheet, PDF certificate draft, or both?

Confirm the filing party

CPSCReady does not file customs entries. If your shipping partner cannot file required CPSC data, you may need a licensed customs broker or another trade partner.

Confirm who is acting as Importer of Record.
Confirm whether Section 321 CPSC eFiling can be handled if applicable.
Confirm tariff code/product category review responsibility.
Contact a licensed customs broker if the carrier or forwarder cannot confirm who will file CPSC import data.

Prepare packet data

A broker-ready packet should make both possible requests easy to answer: all certificate details, Product Registry ID numbers, or both.

Prepare the product, rule, manufacturing, testing, lab, and records-contact details.
Prepare Product Registry ID numbers if the broker will use Product Registry.
Prepare product ID, rule mapping, testing/lab records, records contact, and Product Registry ID numbers before the broker packet.
Send a short broker email template with the data attached or pasted.

You asked for CPSC documents or data for [Product ID]. Can you confirm exactly what is needed before entry?

1. Are you asking for all certificate details, such as product ID, rules, dates, lab, and records contact?
2. Are you asking for Product Registry ID numbers: Certifier ID, Product ID, and Version ID?
3. Can your team file CPSC import data, or do we need a customs broker?
4. Do you require a spreadsheet, a draft CPC/GCC PDF, or both?
5. What is the deadline for final data before entry?

Thanks,
[Importer Name]

No-broker call script

We are the importer preparing CPSC eFiling data. Before the shipment moves, we need to confirm who can file CPSC import data. Do you need all certificate details, Product Registry ID numbers, both, or neither? If neither, do you require us to appoint a licensed customs broker? Once a broker is assigned, what product ID, rule, testing, lab, records-contact, shipment, and Product Registry fields should we provide?

Mini FAQ

Common questions

Is a CPC/GCC PDF enough?

Maybe not. A PDF may support the record, but the filing partner may need the details in spreadsheet fields or may need Product Registry ID numbers.

What if the carrier cannot file CPSC data?

Confirm whether a licensed customs broker or another filing partner is needed. CPSCReady does not act as that filing party.
